We've heard a lot of questions regarding Baptism over the years. Below, we've tried to answer some of the more common ones and a few we believe are important. If you still have questions, you can always reach out to us at the church by clicking HERE.
Who should be Baptized?
All who have trusted Jesus as the forgiver of their sins and the leader of their life.
Acts 2:38-41— “Repent and be baptized, every one of you...Those who accepted his message were baptized.”
Acts 8:35-38—“Then Philip opened his mouth and beginning from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him. As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, ‘Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?’ And Philip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you may.’ And he answered and said, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’ And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch and he baptized him.”
Why should I be Baptized?
Baptism was commanded by Christ.
Matthew 28:18-20, “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”
Baptism was practiced by the early church. (See book of Acts)
Baptism is an outward act that symbolizes and inward commitment. (Like a wedding band)
Baptism is a picture of our new life in Christ.
Romans 6:3-5, “Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
How should I be Baptized?
Immersion (dunking completely under) is the way that baptism was practiced in the Bible.
Matthew 3:16, “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on Him.”
John 3:23, “Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were constantly coming to be baptized.”
Acts 8:38-9, “Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water the Spirit of the Lord took Philip away...”
The word “baptize” means to dunk under water. Baptism by immersion is the best symbol of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Why should I be baptized by immersion?
(dunking completely under)
Because Jesus was baptized that way.
Matthew 3:16, “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water.”
Every baptism in the Bible was by immersion “…Then both Philip and the man went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water…”
Acts 8:38- The Greek word “baptize” means “to immerse or dip under water.”

I was baptized before, should I be baptized again?

If you were baptized as a baby, child, or before you trusted in Christ, then yes, you should. If you were baptized as a believer elsewhere, you don't have to be baptized again. That said many have chosen to do so as a public declaration.

Do I need to have it all together before I'm baptized?
If that were the case, then we'd probably have to stop doing Baptism services! Being baptized doesn’t mean you’re perfect and being perfect (or anywhere near it) isn't a requirement for Baptism. If you are trusting Christ for salvation, you're ready to be baptized.
How do I know if my child is ready to be baptized?

In order to participate in baptism, kids should be old enough to tell their life change story and the impact Jesus has had in their life. Conversations with kids generally happen around the age of 8. As a parent, you know your child best and may want to encourage your kid to wait even longer until they’re mature enough to make the decision for themselves.
Our church has a page dedicated to child Baptism that is full of resources to help you navigate this discussion with them. You can visit it by clicking HERE.
As a rule, we do not baptize children without their parent's consent.

What if my family doesn’t approve of me being baptized?

Baptism is a personal choice between you and God to publicly share your story. If your family doesn't approve or understand, we would love to talk to you about how to have a conversation with them.

Does baptism forgive my sins?

No—trusting Jesus forgives your sins. Baptism is just a symbol and has no power. Your Baptism is a public declaration of your decision to trust Jesus who does have the power to forgive your sins.
What do I need to do in order to be baptized at The Waymart Church?

Click the Baptism Application button on Baptism page, which can be found HERE. A staff member will reach out and walk with you the rest of the way. You'll have a chance to share your testimony, we'll explain what happens the day of, and even show you the tank if you'd like. What you won't have to do is jump through hoops, prove your faith or be 'good enough'. You just have to have a faith in Jesus Christ (and possibly remember to take your phone out of your pocket). That's it.
